Presented by Scale Free Network and physicist/collaborator Andrew Melatos, the workshop was inspired by the patterns of movement within our sculptural-kinetic work A Hierarchy of Eddies.
It began with an artist/scientist talk and an introduction to the key scientific ideas explored in the work. The practical component of the session explored process-based drawing techniques as a tool for close observation, and as a means to explore and depict the whirling eddies visible inside the chamber.
We drew on layers of acetate in different colours corresponding to the patterns made when different fans were turned on (just fan 1, just fan 2, both fans). The final stage of the workshop involved visually comparing our observations and patterns using an overhead projector.
